LOL, OMG, BRB

How many of us now write like this? Since computer abbreviations have become so common place, I sometimes get angry when I have to actually write in full sentences! As someone who didn’t grow up with all this computer technology, I had to learn to write in full sentences. I read letters and documents from people 10 years younger, and I wonder if English is their second language with computer language being their first. Between IM’s, text messages and email, these abbreviations have become common place.

Can we send official work with abbreviations like, LOL, OMG, BRB, OMFG, LMFAO, TTYL, WTF and J/K. I must admit, I love them as well. I consider it updated shorthand! I wonder if Bush and Tony Blair sit behind their desks texting each other in abbreviations as the world falls apart! Can major deals be made via shorthand text? Does every language have its own computer shorthand or is it universal? Is someone completely out of the loop if they don’t know these abbreviations? I envision the modern day work memo going like this. Yo, wtf happened in the company fridge? Idk wtf smells so bad, but omg it’s nasty. Someone better clean it or ur all gonna get fired, j/k! lol. But really now, wtf, clean it before the end of the day. Ttyl!

I know almost all of this things because I'm 14.

LOL = Laugh Out Loud
TTYL = Talk To You Later
BRB = Be Right Back
BRT = Be Right There
DND = Do Not Disturb
OMG = Oh My God/Oh My Gosh
WTF = What The F*ck
WTH = What The Hell
GTG = Got To Go/Gotta Go
BTW = By The Way
TC = Take Care
GBU = God Bless You

and other stuffs like that..

How can we teach our kids how to speak, read and write a correct grammar and correct spelling in schools...if we don't respct the language ourselves. How can we expect from them a nice and correct language if we don't??? We are loosing the meaning of the words and the spoken language. I think it is a desgrace, desrespect and very tasteless (the shorthand).

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I have been known to completely disregard messages full of internet shorthand.

Specifically the shortening of things like "you" and "are". They're not long words to start, why must we shorten them when it's not absolutely necessary?

My husband gets frustrated with me sometimes. When I text message, I spell out every word, no matter what. It's just habit, so I don't develop the habit of using informal shorthand constantly.

Someone should make a list of all these abbreviations so us mature people know what you are saying.
