Staying Energized

Maybe you work in an office, or maybe on the road, or maybe at home. No matter where you work or what kind of work you do, I think staying energized is so important to having a successful day. As a multitasking mom and business owner, my energy level takes major dips throughout the day. I have tried to find things that work for me and for my schedule, while balancing all of my responsibilities.

Exercising first thing in the morning used to be the one thing I would not comprise, but 2 kids and 1 business later, that goal has gone out the window. Although I do try to fit a work out in several times a week and on the weekends, it is just not the same. Rearranging schedules and finding time for exercise is sometimes a challenge. On the very rare days that my 3 year old takes a nap, I often try to take a 15 min power nap with him. What a difference that makes! I think power naps should be instituted as part of the American business day. When living is Spain, observing the ‘siesta’ time of the day was so effective for me.

So power naps are not always an option, therefore high protein snacks are my second choice. I try to keep cheese, peanuts, and yogurt on hand for a quick and easy pick me up. Then of course I also have to have my daily Diet Coke at approximately 1:30 pm or I will really be on the downhill slide. As stated in a previous post regarding working moms, I agree that working moms are always working. When the job is done for the day, the family responsibilities just keep coming. I often run out of steam in the early evening, just when I need tons of energy to deal with rough housing toddlers, bath time, homework, etc.

I keep thinking one day I will just wake up and feel totally energized all day because I will finally have it all under control. Sadly I don’t think that will happen any time soon. So for now, I will continue to make an effort to get to the gym, power nap when I can, and buy 24 packs of Diet Coke, all the while running my business, teaching classes, attending business conferences, volunteering in preschool, driving to and from kindergarten, ballet, swimming, skating…… I think I am ready for a power nap right now!
