Thy Cubicle Runneth Over
My co-workers know all about my passion for fashion, obsession for all things that glitter, and my affinity towards pretty purses. After all, it's hard to hide it when you're sitting in a cubicle with all your shoes out in the open strewn about underneath the cubicle.
I simply had to count them. Nine pairs of shoes (mostly black) and two pairs of sneakers.
And let's not forget my side drawer: an interview suit and an adorable little black top I completely forgot was MIA. "Hooray! So that's where you were all along. I've missed you!" I say in my head to the garment (yes, I know this is weird and I am working on it - haha.). As for my bottom desk drawer? It houses my gym clothes, that is if I ever venture back to that place during lunchtime or on the way home for that matter. And how about my cabinet which is supposed to contain files? Listerine, in-case-of-emergency cereal bars for some afternoon snacking, and a toothbrush/toothpaste.
What I'm getting at is this: my cubicle isn't only my work station. It's my walk-in closet.
The latest issue of Women for Hire Magazine summoned us to ponder: "What If?" Well, I'd like to take it one step further. From yours truly who lives in a 400 sq foot apartment in the heart of The Big Apple, I've simply run out of room. If closets are too much to ask for at the office, heck, I'll settle for a locker! At least some place where my shoes are hidden and clothes are neatly hung. What if we all had lockers, I ask and then punctuate with an exclamation point?!
Keep in mind my dual life of recruiter by day, writer by night, like Superman (check that, Superwoman!) I've been known to go to the ladies room at the end of the day to get ready for various soirees which commence right after work. Items tend to accumulate in my cube since I typically don't bring my work attire along with me to various nightlife events; they simply end up staying @ the office.
In a flash (snap fingers here), I morph out of recruiting manager mode into press pass mindset, changing out of my pinstriped suit into something comfortable and way less corporate which is almost always black. Then of course, I freshen up the make-up (it's all about the ravishing red lipstick and a fresh coat of mascara). For instance, I have a fashion show to attend tonight in midtown and completely forgot to "pack" this morning! (It's a good thing that I found that cool black top this morning, huh?)
So for now I'll continue to adore my dual roles and the wardrobe changes which go along with it, shoes and all. I just need to remember to bring my little red carry-on suitcase into the office to "clean" my so-called closet for fall! The only challenge? Finding space for it once I bring everything back home.

Hi there and thanks for both of your comments!
Kylie - good questions. I have three black pairs which are my go-to shoes...They're stylish, comfortable and very professional looking (a difficult combo to find! My secret vice? Nordstrom.com)
As for the make-up every day, I tend to go light (that is if I even remember to apply at all) and then glam it up when I'm done with daywear into the night.

That is a lot of shoes!
But which are your favorite type to wear? Do you have a pair that is not only comfortable, but also extremely professional looking?
Also, do you wear makeup every day at work, or only sometimes? Personally, I am much more likely to wear makeup on a Monday than a Friday. I try to be light enough with it that people don't notice a real difference.

Your writing is expressive and colorful. I see everything you are talking about. This is my first "trip" to this website. I am so happy I found it (hear the sound of laughter and feel a swell of relief and connection in the air!)
