Visionary or Visionless?
Apparently, I’m a little “out there”. My ideas seem to be different than everyone elses. My vision seems to be coming from the other side of town. Some people get me and some don’t. Am I strange or just a visionary?
Am I a renegade or idealistically retarded? When does one cross the line between being a creative visionary to just having plain cheesy, stupid ideas? I find I’m constantly defending or having to explain my ideas while everyone just stares at me with a blank look. When my vision comes together, they usually get it, but at the onset of the idea, I can usually silence a room in the first sentence. Why do I have to be like everyone else in order to fit in and be accepted? How did the other revolutionary thinkers get past the “where does she come up with this stuff” to “wow, what a visionary”? Where is the line drawn and is there a line at all?
Even the name of this blog started out as “Renegade or Retard”. I changed it thinking it might be too “in your face”. That’s the truth of how I feel sometimes. Obviously there is no place for me in the corporate cubicle world, but it would be nice to blend the two together more harmoniously with a creative tilt. It would have been interesting to see how I would have performed in the dot com boom rollerblading around the office while I thought of new ideas, sipping on Starbucks. Do I keep on with my wild ideas for business or conform so no one thinks I’m too out there to fit into their little box of what a spa professional is supposed to look and act like.

Laura, I say be who you are and let that light shine. No matter if others see your vision or not. In my last corporate position we used to laugh about this very topic because two people in a meeting might say exactly the same thing. The first being the visionary, maybe not in a position of influence. The second would merely rephrase the first one's statement, but add a slight twist; a nod of the head, praying hands while bowing slightly forward. You get the picture. The norm became, "But I just said that!"
"Yes, but you didn't place your hands in a palms together position and bow your head while saying it!"
Who knows why great ideas are accepted from some and not others. If you fall into the other category, no bother. Just keep doing what you do best and benefit from making visionary moves when you know that they're right. You'll end up with Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, Prince, Madonna and many others who chose their own path.
And if you don't make a ton of money like they did as a result at least you'll be happier following your own vision!
