Who moved my cheese?

Comfortable shoes are a match made in heaven for my feet. They enable me to walk and glide across the pavement effortlessly. My movement has a sway and air of confidence that speaks without me uttering a single word. My shoes eventually experience wear and tear and ultimately a new pair of the same comfort level is sought after. The new pair may be uncomfortable not quite the perfect fit of my previous shoes. My attitude and outlook slightly change due to this discomfort. As the shoes and my feet adjust to each other it is a struggle in which either the shoes win, or the decision to let them go is made. My resistance to new shoes is a glimpse into one of the ways I may initially respond to change in general.

There is a book entitled Who Moved My Cheese? that explores the different ways in which individuals react, respond and adapt to change. “Sniff” is the person who sniffs out change early. “Scurry” is the person who scurries into action. “Hen” is the person who denies and resists change for fear it will lead to something worse. “Haw” is the person who learns to adapt in time when the change is viewed as leading to something better. Each of these personality types finds themselves in the maze of life trying to find their cheese which is a symbol of personal comfort level and happiness.

Idealistically, I would like to be “Haw” at all times but realistically sometimes I sniff, scurry or simply resist change. I am a creature of habit but I eventually adjust to change however my initial reaction is “Who moved my cheese?”
