Looking Is Never Over

Women for Hire’s very own blogger, Vivacious Vicki recently wrote about attending the CNN Hero Awards. She wrote how the experience moved her to want to contribute to Society’s bigger picture. In my mind, as a recruiter, Vicki is already contributing to the bigger picture. I think connecting people with jobs is a really BIG deal! Whether Vicki or other recruiters’ think of their daily jobs as doing something heroic I have to tell them that I think what they do is grand. To me, connecting people with jobs is definitely contributing to the "bigger picture.” Just ask anyone who is looking for a job!

I’ve ended my own job search landing in the opportunity, industry and company I wanted. Although, I’ve stopped looking for myself I have not stopped actively networking and looking for family and friends that are still seeking employment. I’m in the habit, so why not just redefine the keywords, descriptions and titles to others’ needs. My recent experiences of looking for a job can help others.

My experience says that job searches are getting longer even with the plethora of electronic information available. The old adage of “it’s darkest before the dawn” certainly holds true for job seeking. I’ve learned first hand rule number one is, Don’t Give Up, network, network, network! If all else fails and you’re ready to throw in the proverbial job-search towel, go back to rule number one, don’t give up!

With the bigger picture in mind, the economists’ latest forecasts indicate that many people may experience looking for employment. So, once you land your dream job, remember to keep looking for your network that aided you. “Paying it Forward,” has never more evident than in job searches. In respect to career opportunities for those still unemployed, the looking is never over.

This is so true, until recently I was quite frankly horrible at networking. I don’t really have one of those outgoing dynamic personalities. I am quite reserved and that was my downfall two years ago when I was unemployed looking for a job. It is unfortunate to be in the situation when you are looking for a job and no one really knows you or your work ethic. There were countless times when I reached out to someone referred to me and I received little to no response from that person. In hindsight, I was unrealistic in thinking someone I did not know at all could work a miracle in getting me a job or interview on my behalf. To make a long story short as you mentioned in your blog here “Looking is Never Over.” You should always open yourself to the opportunity to getting to know individuals in different industries because you never know how beneficial establishing good relationships can be.

I was just talking with a friend yesterday who is now job hunting. She'd had her last job for ten years and had stopped networking. She's starting from scratch! "They" always to say to keep up your contacts, to be in effect always looking for a job, but it's easy to forget this in the day to dayness of life. So this is great advice!
