ONE WOMAN MACHINE – JUST CALL ME A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER
If I had only known how much I was going to learn by opening a business, I would have opened it before I went to college. Had I done that, I would have known what my strengths and weaknesses are. Nothing can prepare you for all the responsibilities of owning a small business. The only way to really know if something will work, is to try and fail. That can be a big waste of time and money. Those are two things any business owner has very little to spare. As the owner, I decided on how to market and advertise. I created the website and brochure, then researched the designer for my budget. I found the salon to work out of and the towns to recruit clients from. I bought the retail products, the machinery, the blankets, rolls of cotton, candles and the all-important self burned cd’s of music to relax me, if not the client!
At night, I go home and organize the receipts, bank statements, sales info and client charts. In my spare time, I’m thinking of the next holiday special, marketing event and how to sell more products and services. If I had done this years ago, I would have been better equipped to know what I wanted to do with my life at 18 rather than 28, when I first started in the beauty industry. If I had a lot of money backing me, would I be able to give up all the control over the daily operations, or trust someone else to come up with all the ideas? What would I do with all that free time? Now that one business is up and running, I’ve taken on a small percentage of a second business just for fun! Want some all natural skin care? I know the owner!
