Who says women can't drive?
Sunday, April 20th marked a huge success for women in sports. Danica Patrick, Indy-car's competitive racing front woman, made history when she became the first woman to win an Indy-car race.
Patrick has been fighting the male-dominated world of racing for over three years now. She's been taking the heat for not being victorious after coming so close to winning many races. Her "fellow" racers feel that auto racing is a man's sport. Dealing with these kinds of sexist remarks has become part of her every day life, but she doesn't let it affect her. Instead she uses the comments to fuel her desire to win and challenge her to make it happen.
Richard Petty once stated in an interview, "I just don't think it's a sport for women, and so far, it's proved out. It's really not. It's good for them to come in. It gives us a lot of publicity, it gives them publicity. But as far as being a real true racer, making a living out of it, it's kind of tough."
She proved him wrong and the rest of the world when she showed she had what it takes by winning the Indy Japan 300. This is not only a long awaited victory for her, but for women everywhere. "Dreams really do come true. You just have to be persistent enough," Patrick said. "This was a long time coming. I can only say I'm just glad it's over. I'm not going to lie. I was getting frustrated. I believed in myself. It was just a matter of when it was going to happen. I've been asked so many times when I'm going to win my first race -- finally no more of those questions."
Very few sports even offer women the chance to compete against men. It was an accomplishment when women were finally allowed to race with the men and now a triumph that we've won. She's an inspiration to never give up on your dreams. "It's going to be one of those things that's remembered. It's a first and firsts are always in history books. I've definitely thought about that before, and I've always hoped and wanted to be that person," Patrick said.

I think it's great that women race. I use to ride 3 Day Event in the equestrian world. The equestrian sports were, for a long time, the only place where a woman competed against a man as an equal. Due to the nature of our "partner" women were very successful. (Something about a sensitive hand and seat.) While a car can't feel or think for itself, I think women can race and should be racing in all categories. If they were, and there were more of them, there might be fewer crashes caused by aggression. I admire all the drivers, but this limiting attitude toward women is completely out of place. By the time a woman gets to the pro circuit she's already done years of competitive driving on small and dirt tracks, and proved herself just like any other driver. I think it's great that women are in the sport.
