Recession Schmession

Ok, I know what you're thinking. The economy is in the tank, the stock market is as capricious as it gets and there's so much uncertainy it's frightening. You know what? You're right.

But, I am here to say that it could be business as usual if we want it to be. As a recruiter, I'm still making offers. We're still hiring, there are still opportunities for those who seek. I speak to candidates exploring opportunities; they're not at a standstill rather they're using the bleak economy as a way to forge ahead. Either they've been downsized, will be downsized or for the majority of the people I'm speaking to, they are secure in their own job and what better time to explore opportunities than when they already have a job?

It's incredibly hard to ignore the daily news and turmoil and I'm not suggesting to live in a vaccuum but rather, how can we flip it upside down? Utilize it to our advantage, make it work for us instead of living trepidatiously. While this blog is rather short and I'm suffering from a bout of writer's block I think in this case it's ok to have tunnel vision and think of it as as marathon: look out for number one and not let the state of affairs surrounding you create a detour from pursuing your dreams before you even get out of the gate.

Will work for jewelry

Hi. My name is Vicki. And I'm a jewelryaholic. I don't know when it started or how but I'm here to say that yes, I am addicted to all things that glitter. (Actually, I do know when it started; when I was literally a toddler. After all, I was two years old celebrating my birthday in yes, plastic clip on earrings!)

Here's the thing: when you're passionate about something I think it's important to make it your obsession. Or make your obsession your passion which is exactly why I am exploring part-time weekend gigs to work with jewelry for the holidays. Granted, I certainly don't know where I'd find the time but I owe it to myself to explore it. Hence, the purpose of this blog.

What are you passionate about? If you could go back to your childhood and have one day to simply play, what would you play with? Where would you be? What would you be doing all day where the time just flees by and before you know it it's time to get out of the sandbox?

As I talk to various people in the industry it's an interesting thing: when you're mad about something divine it doesn't feel like work. Chalcedony, pink tourmaline, blue lace agate. I feel like if I was quizzed on eccentric gems my course of study would be so much fun it wouldn't feel like work. And, my friend, isn't that what working should all be about? Ahhhh.

Hi Vivacious Vicky,
I agree with you about doing what you are passionate about - then it never seems like work. I'm also a jewelryholic. Maybe this is the time to put more emphasis on hobbies that could turn into businesses if jobs go.

My image consulting business is down, since many companies consider this a "soft skill." As a result, I'm making new products now to augment income. In a few weeks I should have the first shipment of hand-made silk ties I designed for men; and I'll be working on another eBook. Looking for a source for bold earrings in silver. Do you have any, Vicki?
