Under Promise Over Achieve

A fellow coworker of mine offers the following advice in terms of delivering results, “under promise so that you can appear to over achieve.” I am slightly confused because this message totally goes against the notion to promise to go above and beyond expectations and to always be as close to one hundred percent on target as possible. Is this an excellent strategy and a great way to do business? Is it an acceptable practice if it is the secret mantra of a presidential candidate, politician, spouse, business partner or a home builder?

Words have power “I think I can” says I am not sure I can deliver while “I will do it” is authoritative and commanding in action. The current presidential election leaves voters wondering who will over achieve in terms of their promises especially since Americans feel the pressure of a recessive economy, failing education systems and health care that often appears to be unfavorable for those struggling to pay for benefits. Imagine if your spouse said “I think I will be able to commit and remain faithful.” This would probably bring self doubt and trust concerns on the forefront of the relationship. If your business partner or home builder says that your home, products or services may be delivered on time this would also cause some uneasiness. The most important thing to remember is to never make a promise you are not willing to keep especially when people are depending on you to get the job done.

Your word is bond and it is a testament of your character and the responsibility you take in communicating your true capabilities. I now understand the mantra “under promise over achieve” and to me it means that I don’t get into something overestimating what I can actually accomplish. There will be times when you feel you have overcommitted yourself and there will be some roadblocks on the road to completing your tasks. Overall, recognize your strengths and weaknesses so you will be able to prioritize the time you need to finish what you have started.

It's just a sign of laziness. People want to only do enough to get by but want all the glory.

I see your point. I become upset when I feel like I've been lied to about a promise.

i think it is easy to say lie than to say the truth

Good questions!
