What's your '08 high five moment?
For me lately it's been about giving back and looking at the intangibles. Having the ability to know that I provided guidance to someone or cheered them on. It's also about the cool factor: recognizing you speak the language of your profession and realize if someone was on an airplane sitting next to you they would immediately know what you did for a living without you even having to think twice about it.
Or how about the relationships you've cultivated with co-workers over the past twelve months? Maybe it's co-workers you previously worked with and you have the ability to stay in touch with them frequently? That's a pure gift. Or maybe attending a meeting that you thought wouldn't go so well but you did your research and your team pulled through?
It's so easy to fall into the mode of the '09 resolution without looking towards the past while wanting to remain in the present. I suppose that's the conundrum but I'm wondering how we can move our careers to the next level without pausing, without looking at those a-ha moments, those days where you seriously deserved a high five and even patted yourself on the back if it was something small like meeting up at Starbucks with someone you met at an industry event.
The more we have of those moments, the more they simply become part of our day and well, the special becomes daily and that in itself is a pure high five moment indeed.
