Strategic Job Hopper

My Favorites...

Book: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey really got me on track at work. The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield changed how I view the world around me.

Movie: Juno, and I’m still listening to the sound-track.

Song or Album: No More Turning Away – Pink Floyd

Snack: Green mango with salt on the streets of Barranquilla (my hometown in Colombia)

Time of Day and why: I LOVE mornings – between 5:10a and 7a – there’s just so much opportunity and what feels like so much time. It’s when I meditate, read and go to the gym.

Guilty Pleasure(s): Dark chocolate covered strawberries from David Jones in Sydney and fried fish with a really cold beer on the beach of Cartagena. (Since I’ve been vegan for a year, I’ll have to stick to the cold beer next time I’m in town)

Quote: Start with the end in mind – create yourself. It’s one of the rules I live by.

When I was younger I wanted to be...
An astronaut. In fact, my one and only Cabbage Patch Kid doll was an astronaut and for my Bat-mitzvah I asked my dad for a telescope.

The thing I value most about my job is…
Being able to inspire and empower people through my writing.

The one thing I have to do everyday is….
Four things: Drink wheat-grass, meditate, take really deep breaths and get an endorphin fix through exercise.

The biggest fear I have conquered is….
I make it a point to face my fears. At the moment I’m taking cold showers every day so that I loose my fear of jumping into a cold pool when I go swimming on Sundays. It might not be a life-changing experience, but I’m getting better at talking myself into the cold water.

However, on the top of my list is accepting a job to sell a sales force effectiveness solution when I did not grasp what a data-base was or how it was built. The day before my interview with the company’s commercial director, I asked my cousin to call my soon-to-be boss and pretend to be a customer so she could get me more details. Even then and after looking up the product online I simply didn’t get what a sales force effectiveness solution was – but I accepted the job offer because it was too good to refuse. That has been one of the most empowering experiences in my career. I now know that most things at work can be learned. More so, the first 3 months feel the most uncomfortable and then things begin to feel better. Which means that with discipline and 8 hours of sleep every night to cope with the brain over-stimulation most learning curves can be conquered.
